Open Doors noted that the tension in the centre had increased around the time of Ramadan, when hunger and thirst among the Muslims led to heightened emotions.
One interviewee said that, during Ramadan, “The Afghans does not want [sic] to use the same washing machine we wash with because to them we are unworthy and impure. From the moment the Afghans knew that we are Christians, they disinfected the bathroom every time we used it. They call us infidels, neciz [impure], won’t shake our hands and are very careful to not have any physical contact with us.”
Open Doors added that, “In general, the Muslim refugees avoided any contact with non-Muslims during Ramadan – fearing defilement and becoming impure. They said it would render the validity of their fasting null and void… Muslims avoided touching any common objects (e.g. body contact with toilet seats) so that they had no indirect contact with ‘infidels’. Sanitation became extremely poor. It was unclear who was going to be responsible for cleaning up the faeces, which then led to frequent conflicts within the community.”
The charity said it was particularly important for staff to recognise the challenge of dealing with an influx of refugees from Islamic nations.
“If we take a look into the mainly Islamic countries from which many of these refugees come, and consider how they treat religious minorities, it is obvious that their understanding of Islam is most definitely not compatible with the idea of religious freedom and the equality of all people,” the study noted. “Thus, it is justified to speak of systematic attacks, because the cultural and religious influence of a large number of refugees is based on the teachings of the Quran, something which is deeply ingrained.”
Open Doors added that refugee quarters “are much more aligned to the needs of Muslims, which then often has substantial side effects for the other residents”.
“The situation in the Rotenburg reception centre is no different from many other, comparable facilities where Muslims has been living long enough to establish their own Islamic parallel society,” noted the study. “Because of their faith, Christians are devalued to become second-class citizens and are branded ‘impure’ and ‘apostates’, while enduring physical assaults whenever they offer resistance. The same mind-set is also expressed by moderate Muslims, due to the fact that, according to Muslim thinking, Islam is the superior religion, which pursues the submission of all people to Allah.”
Another interviewee reported: “Every day the same group of Muslims from different countries walks through the quarters and forms a Sharia council, consulting on what they should do with us and according to which laws they are planning to sentence us. The council consists of Sheiks und Mullahs.”
Many of the Christian refugees who have fled to Germany have left nations where persecution against Christians is “severe”, according to Open Doors. The 49 Christians in the Rotenburg reception centre are from Iraq, Iran, Eritrea and Ethiopia. On Open Doors’ 2016 World Watch List, the annual ranking of the countries where Christians face the worst persecution, Iraq is 2nd, Eritrea 3rd, Iran 9th and Ethiopia 18th.
Recommendations, Open Doors listed these recommendations for other centres:
The percentage of non-Muslim security staff must be adequately increased. Christians and members of other religious minorities should be employed [as staff] at all levels.
For the asylum process, all Christians must have Christian interpreters.
Christians [should be] connected to local churches … [and] Christian contacts [should be assigned] whom Christians can turn to when affected by persecution.
In the case of any family affiliation between refugees and support staff, it is vital that religious impartiality is guaranteed and that effective supervision is employed on a regular basis.
The facility’s management and staff members must be informed about the religious motives behind discrimination against Christians and other religious minorities by Muslims whose native countries have an Islamic majority.
With the help of a pre-prepared guideline within the framework of integration, all asylum seekers in the quarters must be educated explicitly about religious freedom and specifically be informed on the rights of Christians and other religious minorities (including moderate Muslims) within refugee facilities and reception centres.
Preventive measures [should be implemented], ensuring the protection of religious minorities during the entire process of asylum-seeking and integration.
The proportion of Christians and other religious minorities [should] correspond with that of Muslims in shared accommodation.
Christians and other religious minorities who have already been victims of persecution and discrimination should be given separate accommodation. This should include the possibility of decentralised accommodation [e.g. outside main reception centres]. Authorities must refrain from categorically blocking decentralised accommodation, especially if such living quarters are available for affected Christians.

Of more than a million Christians in Iraq before the 2003 war, at least 700,000 have fled the country. Quoting information from Open Doors, an international charity that supports Christians under pressure, he said persecution is on the rise compared to recent years. “Persecutors are operating in the dark, so it’s our responsibility to bring their deeds to light,” said Singhammer. Although the discussion “should not lead to digging trenches between religions”, one solution, he said, “could be to cut the money flow to oppressive governments”. Ján Figel from the Slovak Republic was introduced as the first Special Envoy for the promotion of Freedom of Religion or Belief Outside the EU. While welcoming the creation of Figel’s new post, Volker Kauder bemoaned the fact that Figel can give only two days a month to the role and has only one assistant. Kauder promised he would try to change this.
A Macedonian MP pointed out that many other countries should have special envoys. He praised Germany as a role model for debating the issue in Parliament, as did Rabbi David Saperstein, US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. Saperstein said the subject seemed to be a “no-go” in American debates in the Senate. Asiya Nasir from Pakistan, a founding member of the IPPFoRB, was another speaker. Nasir, a Christian, is in her third term as a parliamentarian in the National Assembly of Pakistan, where she is in the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Party as a minority MP, and said she has earned the respect of Muslim MPs. In Pakistan, she said, churches are allowed to have their own buildings and gather for services, but that they are prohibited from sharing their faith with non-Christians. The blasphemy law prevents Christians from doing so, she said, and it has also been misused to persecute Christians. She cited the example of Shahzad and Shama Masih, a young Christian couple burned alive by a mob after they it was announced from a mosque’s loudspeakers that they had burnt a copy of the Qur’an. It is due to Nasir’s work as an MP that mosques are no longer allowed to use their speakers for this purpose. She said her motto is, “You cannot progress in isolation”, and that she continues to work with other minorities who are also deprived of their rights.
Another representative was Vian Dakhil, the only Yazidi member of the Kurdish party in the Iraqi parliament. She described the situation of the Yazidis, a Kurdish minority. Since August 2014, she said the Yazidis have been attacked, killed and enslaved by ISIS. Thousands of men have been killed, 6,000 women and girls have been kidnapped and raped, hundreds of thousands live as refugees in tent camps. Four advocacy letters addressing specific religious-freedom concerns in Eritrea, Pakistan, Sudan and Vietnam were signed by the parliamentarians and attendees. In them were several names of church leaders who are imprisoned, in detention or under house arrest solely for practising their religion. Also criticised in the letters were: torture of prisoners, the confiscation and demolition of church buildings, and forbidding the distribution of books and scriptures. Volker Kauder announced that delegations would be revisiting these countries to assess whether any progress is made.
Another result of the conference was that an African MP announced that an African IPPFoRB group had begun in conjunction with the meetings in Berlin. Leonardo Quintao, a Brazilian MP, shared that a South American IPPFoRB branch will meet later this year in Paraguay.
David Anderson, an MP from Canada and member of the IPPFoRB Steering Group, said: “Make no mistake, with 74% of the world’s population living in countries with high or very high restrictions or hostilities, freedom of religion or belief is an embattled right and the defining issue of our time. Freedom to believe is what shapes our common humanity and, if we are not careful, we risk losing it.” Summing up the conference, he reminded MPs that they are “multipliers” responsible for bringing in even more people, and that “the marathon has only just begun”.
“We have come far in a short time. Starting with only five MPs three years ago, we are now an ever growing network and have accomplished much,” said Abid Raja, MP in Norway, also on the steering committee. Many agreed that one of the biggest strengths of the IPPFoRB is that it’s an organic network and not a set, inflexible organisation.
As an example of success, Raja cited a recent visit to the government of Myanmar by MPs of five countries to address human-rights violations. Baroness Elizabeth Berridge, Member of the House of Lords, UK and steering member of the IPPFoRB, noted that the North American team is less likely to address problems in North Korea than, for example, an Asian team; Malaysian MP Charles Santiago confirmed this by reporting a positive dialogue with the North Korean embassy in Malaysia.

Suaad’s eyes light up when she talks about her old job in Mosul, where she’d worked since the 1980s. But there is sadness. “Actually, I haven’t experienced much happiness since I became displaced from my town on the Nineveh Plain,” she says.She remembers the good things – how she lived together in peace with her neighbours, whether they were Christian, Yezidi or Muslim. She was born in Mosul and had expected to grow old there, but in 2014 she had to flee from IS overnight. “I haven’t been able to return since,” she says. “I feel heavy inside, not knowing what has happened to my town.”
Suaad says she will only be happy again when she can return home.
A widow with no children, Souad has been staying with her brother and his family for two years. She says her brother would never ask his older sister for rent but she saw him struggling financially as the economic crisis in the country got worse. So Souad found work through a church-run project that set up a sewing factory, which meant she could then contribute to the family income.
“The priest asked me to be in charge of the factory so I took the job,” she says. “I would have done it for nothing if necessary, but I am happy that I get paid and I can share it with my [brother’s] family.”
Suaad makes clothes for those who need them most. If they can afford to buy the clothes, they pay for them; if they can’t, they don’t have to. “It’s what I like most about the job. That I can share with those in a worse position then me,” she says. “Sometimes a displaced person asks me to make a dress. I don’t charge them. How could I?”She helps train other displaced women; some are then hired to work in the factory. “In just a few weeks I can teach them the basics of tailoring. They can use these skills to earn money for their families either here in the factory or elsewhere. Either way, it helps them work towards a future,” she says.
According to the UN, one in every 113 people on earth is a refugee. About one fifth of Lebanon’s population is made up of refugees – at 1.4 million it is only second to Turkey (2 million) in accepting the highest number of refugees from Syria. Syria’s own population has undergone “the largest displacement crisis globally,” says the UN – more than half its pre-war population of 22 million are no longer living in their own homes. About 7.6 million Syrians are internally displaced within the country and 4.4 million are refugees outside it.
About 3.3 million Iraqis have been displaced within their own country. Many have ended up in Erbil in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq. Published: Oct. 10, 2016, UPDATE (10 Oct.)Three Iranian Christian converts are appealing after they were sentenced to 80 lashes each for drinking alcohol during Holy Communion. (Non-Muslims are permitted to drink alcohol in Iran, but leaving Islam is forbidden, so any such conversions are not recognised.)
Yasser Mossayebzadeh, Saheb Fadaie and Mohammad Reza Omidi – all from Muslim backgrounds – were also charged with “acting against national security”, alongside Youcef Nadarkhani, a pastor once sentenced to death for apostasy. They are due to appear in court again in the northern city of Rasht on 15. Oct. The maximum sentence for that charge is six years in prison. This is the second time Omidi has been convicted of drinking alcohol. A third conviction could lead to his execution.
Mossayebzadeh, Fadaie and Omidi were initially arrested on 13 May alongside Nadarkhani and his wife, Tina. The couple were released later that day, but the three others were detained.
More than 200 Christians have been detained by Iranian authorities since 2015. Many are in jail, while others have been released conditionally, pending sentencing or an appeal.
Middle East Concern’s Rob Duncan said that at least 43 Christians were arrested in August alone.

An Iranian Christian leader once sentenced to death for apostasy, Youcef Nadarkhani, has now been charged with acting against national security.
Nadarkhani, who belongs to the non-Trinitarian Church of Iran, was released on 24 July on the condition of raising 1 billion rials (US$ 32,000) for bail within a week, or facing arrest.
He was also accused of being Zionist and informed that he had no right to evangelise.
Nadarkhani was initially arrested in 2009 and charged with apostasy after questioning why his children’s school only taught Islam in their religious education, which he said was unconstitutional.

It mentions the case of Maryam Naghash Zargaran, an Iranian Christian who has undertaken two hunger strikes to protest against her being denied the medical treatment she requires for long-standing health issues. On 31 Aug, Zargaran was for the third time allowed to leave prison to receive medical treatment. Her family have said they hope that this time she will be given long enough to receive adequate care. In October 2015 and in June 2016 she was briefly released for treatment but both times forced to return to prison before it was complete. After her latest hunger strike, which ended on 2 Aug., Middle East Concern said her health had deteriorated further.
Zargaran, a convert from Islam, has served three years of a four-year jail sentence. She was originally arrested in January 2013, in connection with her work at an orphanage alongside Saeed Abedini, who was also imprisoned, but eventually released in January this year.
UPDATE (19 Sep.): On 17 Sep., Zargaran was returned to prison after her medical treatment was again cut short. The NGO group first conducted their survey after religiously motivated abuse and violent attacks from Muslim refugees and security officials had been reported anecdotally at the start of 2016.
Facts and figures – lack of protection for religious minorities
Responding to concerns that the first survey reported cases from only Berlin and Brandenburg, this second survey has interviewed additional Christian refugees from all but one German state (as well as the 10 Yazidis).
More than 300 of the refugees came from Iran, 263 from Syria, 63 from Afghanistan, 35 from Iraq, and nine from Eritrea. Twenty-two were from other countries; 47 more did not specify a country of origin.
Combined, the surveys account for 743 affected Christian refugees. Of that number, 617 (83%) reported multiple assaults; 314 (42%) death threats; 416 (56%) violent assaults; and 44 (6%) sexual assaults.
Ninety-one per cent (674) of those who responded to the surveys said assaults were committed by Muslim fellow refugees, 28% (205) accused Muslim guards and 34% (254) blamed “other parties” (many of the attacks were committed by more than one person). If they failed to assist the victims, guards, camp managers and local authorities could be said to have passively contributed to these attacks as well.
The testimonies of the refugees clearly show, the report says, that the assaults are religiously motivated, the perpetrators driven by a value system they have internalised in their home countries and which they consider to be of “divine authority”. The NGOs conclude that such attacks on minority refugees in shelters occur all over Germany. However, after the first survey was published, German Church commentators noted: “The leaving of Islam and the conversion to Christianity, but also to, for example, the Baha'i faith [is apostasy], still punishable with death in the Islamic world, even though it is often a ‘social’ death rather than a literal one. Since this is true even of many Muslim families living in the West, it would be very unlikely that this problem would not occur in asylum accommodation.”
The NGOs report also surveyed reports of similar incidents from direct contacts across the EU.
Read more: Reported incidents from other EU StatesA German government office replied to an inquiry by Open Doors Germany: “It is expected of all asylum seekers to live together peacefully, irrespective of their religion… The constitutionally protected freedom of religion, which is a highly valued asset, is every person’s due.”However, the NGOs warn, refugees who belong to religious minorities often aren’t experiencing this freedom as they lack the opportunity to freely confess their faith in their refugee homes, sometimes suffering violence and threats if they do.
Authorities and camp management establish safety of refugees. However, there is one “beacon” project in Germany, which gives a positive example of “good practice”, reported too.
In one initial reception facility for refugees, 32 Christians were willing to report the assaults and death threats against them, after regional authorities and facility managers established a safe environment. After yet another incident involving the police, the Christian refugees were moved into separate accommodation. Additionally, security staff and interpreters who themselves held a Christian faith were eventually assigned to them.
The NGOs’ report calls on the government and other responsible agencies to ensure the effective protection of Christian refugees and other religious minorities.
They set out the following recommendations for Merkel’s government to safeguard the refugees during the entire process of asylum-seeking and integration: 1. Provision of separate accommodation for Christians and other religious minorities who have already been victims of persecution and discrimination. This should include the possibility of decentralised accommodation. Authorities must refrain from categorically blocking decentralised accommodation, especially if such living quarters are available for affected Christians.
2. Adequately increasing the non-Muslim percentage of the security staff.
3. Provision of periodical training for sensitising co-workers and security staff assigned to refugee shelters to the reasons behind religious conflicts and the protection of religious minorities.
4. Assignment of trusted people who themselves hold Christian convictions, to whom Christians can turn when they’ve been affected by persecution.
Warning of ‘instrumentalising’ the survey
“This new and extended survey provides a solid base for politicians and church leaders to eventually introduce urgently needed safety measures, in order to comply with human rights, and enact accommodation rules and standard procedures from the EU directives on the reception of asylum seekers, including religious minorities”, the report by the NGOs said.
At the same time, they warned against using the findings as political ammunition in Germany’s heated political climate.
“Anyone who misuses the findings of this new survey for political purposes or his/her own prominence, anyone who tries to interpret the survey as a general denunciation of Muslims, is acting, politically and socially, irresponsibly,” said Markus Rode, CEO of Open Doors Germany. “Our [German] history teaches us to never again ignore the oppression and discrimination of minorities in favour of the perpetrators. Therefore we call on the German Chancellor to personally engage in this matter rather than leave it to the federal states.”

gettyimages.com A group of German NGOs, led by Open Doors Germany, is calling on Angela Merkel’s federal government, and on State governments, to end the “integration experiment” of mixing Christian and Muslim refugees in refugee centres, saying the situation for Christian and other religious minorities there is “still unbearable”. “We have underestimated the role of religion,” said Germany’s Home Secretary, Thomas de Maizière, at the ‘Future Conference on Integration and Migration’ in September, looking back at recent events in his country. Contrary to widespread belief in Germany, he said, the importance of religion and faith has not decreased globally.
In September 2015, German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that any Syrian who could reach Germany could claim asylum there, partly basing her offer on the Biblical principles of welcoming the stranger and those in need. This offer undermined the 1990 Dublin Convention, which said that refugees must claim asylum in the first EU country they reach. This, Merkel argued, was placing a heavy burden on countries like Malta, Italy and Greece. So she also soon urged other EU members to join a quota system, whereby they would be required to re-settle their fair share of asylum seekers too.
Merkel’s gesture of humanity has resulted in an influx into Germany of perhaps a million people since her comment. In March 2016, the head of Germany’s migration office admitted that up to 400,000 had not applied for asylum. Hundreds of thousands have been living in temporary shelters. And the problems of freedom of religion or belief in countries like Iran or Afghanistan or Pakistan appear to have been transplanted to these crowded shelters. ‘I never expected such a thing to happen in Germany’, Many of the people reaching Europe are refugees or asylum seekers: some have fled to Germany from Islamic countries because of the persecution and discrimination they faced at home. Now those from minority faiths, such as Christians or Yezidis, can often experience the same kind of pressure at these refugee shelters in Germany.
For instance, a recently arrived refugee was confronted with these words written on the wall in his refugee shelter: “The time has come to cut off the heads of all non-believers!”
He described his horror: “I was shocked! In Iran this may happen, but I never expected such a thing to happen in Germany. This has shattered my trust.” The group of charities – Open Doors Germany, Action on Behalf of Christians and the Needy, the Central Council of Oriental Christians in Germany and the European Mission Society – has published a report, ‘Lack of protection for religious minorities in Germany’, which summarises the findings of a survey carried out amongst asylum-seekers, seeking to give the evidence behind refugees’ accounts of intimidation.

Despite earlier warnings that minority-faith refugees were being beaten and threatened with death, nothing has been done in a systemic way to give them better protection, according to this report’s findings.
In this latest survey of German refugee and asylum centres, interviews with hundreds of refugees were conducted nationwide between May and September. During this period, 512 attacks on Christian refugees and 10 on Yazidi refugees were documented. The 512 Christians reported either incidents of discrimination, or death threats, or violent attacks, experienced because of their faith.
This second survey follows that of 231 reported cases highlighted in a report that the four NGOs published in May. UPDATE (18 Oct.): Two of the five Iranian Christians arrested during a trip to the Alborz Mountains north-east of Tehran in August have been released on bail, though three are still being detained. Ramil Bet-Tamraz and Mohammad Dehnavi were released after posting bail of around US$33,000 each, according to Middle East Concern. It was initially thought that Amin Afshar Naderi had also been released, but he, Hadi Asgari and Amir Saman Dashti remain in jail. MEC reports that Asgari has faced "particularly intenses pressure" during his interrogation. They still haven't been told what charges they face, although MEC reports that their interrogation related to the activity of Ramil's father, Victor, a a pastor who is still expecting a summons to court over his arrest (alongside Naderi) on Boxing Day 2014.

Five Iranian Christians were arrested on Friday (26 Aug.) during a trip to the Alborz Mountains north-east of Tehran – the latest in a recent spate of arrests. Their wives and families have expressed concern for their safety. One of them, Amin Afshar Naderi, had been arrested before – on 26 Dec. 2014. Also arrested that day was Pastor Victor Bet-Tamraz, whose son, Ramil, was part of the group arrested on 26 Aug.
Victor Bet-Tamraz led the Tehran Pentecostal Assyrian Church before it was shut down by Iran's Ministry of Interior in March 2009. He and Naderi – a convert to Christianity – were arrested alongside another convert while celebrating Christmas at the pastor’s house. All three were charged with conducting illegal evangelism and kept mostly in solitary confinement in Evin prison, before being released on bail in February and March 2015. After his son’s arrest on Friday, Bet-Tamraz visited some of the prisons and interrogation centres in the area, but so far has not found the group. The names of the other three Christians arrested are Hadi Asgari, Mohammad Dehnavi and Amir Saman Dashti. Their wives were separated from them during the raid by security officials from the Ministry of Intelligence and Security. Middle East Concern reports that Afshar had asked to see an arrest warrant and that, after none was produced, he was beaten. Mohabat News reports that only one of them – Amir Dashti – has been able to call his family. He is reported to have told them that they are being held in Tehran’s Evin prison.“All are understandably concerned, as there seems no reason for the arrest apart from to gather evidence to convict Pastor Victor and the others arrested at the same time,” MEC’s Rob Duncan told World Watch Monitor. MEC reported that the Christians’ families “see no reason for the arrests apart from the connection to the 2014 Christmas arrests. It is feared the aim of the MOIS officials is to force confessions and to extract ‘evidence’ against [them]”. Victor Bet-Tamraz had previously found it difficult to find a lawyer willing to act as his defence counsel. Some lawyers have experienced a backlash after representing Christians in court.

A week after a new report claimed that life for some Christian refugees in Germany is “still unbearable”, a case study has been released as an example for other refugee centres to follow.
The study, which profiles a refugee centre in the central German town of Rotenburg an der Fulda, notes that “much action is needed” and demands there be “no more integration experiments at the expense of Christians”.
A list of recommendations is given, including an increase of non-Muslim staff; training for staff about the history of and potential for inter-religious clashes; and education for asylum seekers about religious freedom.
The centre is praised for its response to incidents in June and July, when what the local press initially reported as a “drunken brawl” between refugees was later discovered to have been religiously motivated.
In July, Christians were evacuated from the centre after a message was written on a wall, saying, “To all Muslims: now is the time to behead the unbelievers”.
Open Doors Germany, author of the case study and co-author of the initial report, praised the decision to evacuate the Christians and the subsequent “firm address” to all Muslim staff, in which it was stressed that “such attacks should not be allowed to happen again”. The next day, the Christians were returned and the centre manager told the staff he would be “keeping his eye on them”. Since then, no incidents have been reported.
Open Doors acknowledged the sensitivity of reporting religiously motivated violence, and the possibility some will “exploit” it to feed right-wing or anti-Islamic agendas, but stressed that “the human right of religious freedom and the protection of victims in a country like Germany – that is a constant admonisher of human rights abuses on an international scale – should not be sacrificed for political objectives or the interests of individual groups.
“It is therefore everybody’s duty to take action, so that the protection of the victims can be guaranteed. To remain inactive, to trivialise or to remain silent due to political or other reasons, is to be just as guilty as those who exploit the situation for political reasons”.
‘Slim chance of help’The charity said that, in most centres, “Christians have [a] pretty slim chance of getting help” because “the victims of religiously motivated attacks are a minority, and the reasons why Muslims attack Christians and other religious minorities are not well known to facilities’ operators and management.
'Please help us!'“We, the Iranian refugees based in the city of Rotenburg, have fled from the Islamic Republic of Iran because we have been accused of being Christians and therefore have repeatedly been threatened by torture, imprisonment and the death penalty...
“Here, where we have been accommodated presently, we are exposed to the same kinds of threats as before, this time at the hand of Afghan Muslims, and we fear for our lives.“The Afghan refugees … call us Iranian Christians ‘apostates’ and ‘infidels’ because of our decision to leave Islam and consider the shedding of our blood as legitimate. (Or even necessary.)
“The Muslim Afghans, who by far outnumber us, have beaten us repeatedly … They have threatened to kill us … Therefore we are very much afraid.
“We are asking you, our fellow citizens, desperately for help. You, who engage yourselves in the protection of pets, please also engage yourselves on our behalf. We are suffering these threats and difficulties because of our faith.
“In the hope for the day when throughout the world no-one will be suppressed because of their faith. Thank you very much, your Iranian Christians.”
“For this reason, religiously motivated attacks are either not recognised or they are deliberately trivialised as general conflicts between refugees. The families of the predominantly Muslim support staff, i.e. security personnel and interpreters, will tend to side with their fellow believers in religious conflicts or in some cases even become perpetrators themselves, as experience shows.”
Thirty-two of the 49 Christian refugees living in the centre at the time of the study (out of a total of around 700 (70% Muslim, 10% Christian, 20% other) agreed to be interviewed. Open Doors praised their “courage … [in relating] their experiences of religiously motivated attacks”.

FCO “Religious freedom can counter violent extremism” was the key message at a two-day global conference held at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) last week.
The conference explored ways to build resilience against extremism and identified opportunities for collaboration.
More than 50 expert speakers and over 170 participants from 38 countries met in London ahead of International Religious Freedom Day on 27 Oct.
The FCO, which is responsible for safeguarding the UK’s national security, stated that “extremism is the biggest security challenge of our age and a significant barrier to global prosperity, development, peace and stability”.
‘Most powerful tool’ to fight extremism
Baroness Joyce Anelay, the Minister for Human Rights at the FCO, said: “Freedom of religion or belief is one of our most powerful tools in the fight against extremism. That is why freedom of religion is so important, and directly relevant to the fight against extremism.

FCO. “If we value others, regardless of what – if any – religion they follow, and if we teach our children to do the same, we also give them the tools to reject intolerance. If we lay the foundations for open, equal and plural societies, then we also build communities resilient to extremism; communities where everyone has the intellectual independence to resist hateful ideologies, religious or otherwise.” The conference heard a first-hand account of the consequences of religious intolerance from a Christian gospel singer from the east-African country of Eritrea who was imprisoned in a metal shipping container for nearly three years because of her faith. Helen Berhane, who was arrested in 2003, described her incarceration as “very harsh”. She was tortured and kept in solitary confinement with little food and air. “Even now when I see a container I imagine [the imprisonment] for 32 months,” she told the BBC. Berhane’s home of Eritrea isn’t alone in restricting religious freedom. Countries like China, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Iran, Burma, Bangladesh and North Korea are also variously accused by human rights organisations. Each of these countries appears in the annual World Watch List of the 50 most difficult places to live as a Christian, published by the charity, Open Doors.‘The basic human right’ Freedom of religion, many argued, constitutes the basic human right. “In 74% of countries, there are violations of Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is the right to believe, not to believe or to change your belief,” said religious freedom campaigner Lord David Alton, who spoke about why a knowledge of religion is vital to understanding today's world. A key reason for championing religious freedom, the conference heard, is that it provides the best means of challenging erroneous, potentially dangerous interpretations of faith that can lead to violence.
“One of the most amusing and depressing things you hear from people involved in terrorist activity here is the level of religious illiteracy that they have,” said Raffaello Pantucci, Director of International Security Studies at the Royal United Services Institute. “I can give you a long list of quite amusing stories of individuals who would go off to Syria with a copy of Islam for Dummies,” he said, suggesting how little they knew of the religion they were going to fight for.
David Saperstein, US Ambassador for International Religious Freedom, said: “If there are extremist ideas out there, religious freedom empowers more responsible voices to confront those extremist voices.”
Religions must ‘expel’ violent extremism. Few religions are immune from misrepresentation, said Professor Thomas Farr, Director of the Religious Freedom Project at Georgetown University. “Every religion has had some violent extremism, but every religion has to expel it,” he said. “And today … in my view, the biggest threat is Islamist extremism. Muslims need religious freedom to expel this from their midst. They are prevented from doing so by laws that keep them silent.”

Farr’s opinion was supported by Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyeh, President of the Forum for Peace and Understanding in Muslim Societies, based in the United Arab Emirates. Speaking to the BBC through an interpreter, he said: “Nietzsche said civilisations get sick, and this analogy is appropriate because the Muslim civilisation has become ill. What I’m attempting to do is diagnose that illness and treat from within the tradition itself so that Muslim civilisation can become well again… The treatment is a proper reading of the [Islamic] text and an understanding of the aims and imports of the texts themselves. Therefore, human flourishing; therefore peace. And so religious literacy is very important in understanding the purpose.”
Canon Sarah Snyder, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Director of Reconciliation, said: “Many of the states troubled by violent extremism are deeply religious societies… The cooperation of faith leaders is vital to the building of inclusive, plural and peaceful societies.”
She argued that leaders aren’t just Imams, Bishops, Muftis and Chief Rabbis, but ordinary people of faith who have established their moral authority in a community. This is particularly true of women, she said, who “are often seen as the victims of violence, but [also] they are on the front line of peace-building. Women are the ones who, in every single community that’s facing conflict, are leading peace initiatives. They are the first people to spot early warning signs of a shift in that community; they are usually the first people to try and change the negative shifts, and they are tackling extremism with their own young people and their own communities. So we need to see the women as agents of change, not just as victims.”

Margaret and her husband, the Bishop of Iran, lost their son in 1980 during the anti-Christian hostility of Iran's Islamic Revolution. A woman has just been buried by her husband in the grounds of Winchester Cathedral; famous figures such as Jane Austen lie inside it. Margaret Dehqani-Tafti, who in 1979 took a bullet to save the life of her husband, the Bishop of Iran, died on 22 October 2016 at the age of 85, surrounded by her family. She and her husband Hassan lost their only son in 1980, when he was murdered in the anti-Christian hostility that followed Ayatollah Khomeini’s Islamic Revolution. Margaret was the youngest daughter of William Thompson, the Bishop whom her husband would succeed. The Briton spent her early years in Iran and met Hassan when he began working for her father after serving as an interpreter in the Imperial Iranian Army between 1943 and 1945. Hassan had been born in Taft, Iran - to a Muslim father who was a shoe-maker and a mother who had embraced Christianity; he became a Christian at 17 in 1938 after attending church-run schools. He and Margaret married in 1952 after he spent two years in the UK, training for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge.
Their Anglo-Iranian match was considered highly unusual, but years later, Margaret explained how they managed to reconcile their different cultures. ‘We have many differences but we both have the same goal: serving God,’ she said. ‘In order to serve God we have put aside our differences and only supported each other in this journey. The other secret is respect; we have accepted each other as we are and neither of us asks for what the other cannot provide. Regarding culture, I must add that I grew up in Iran and Hassan grew up among British people. We knew each other from a very young age, it feels natural for us, culture, language and so on.’ After they had been married for nine years, Margaret’s father William resigned at the age of 75. Hassan was appointed to succeed him, and became the first Persian-born Anglican Bishop of Iran. However, Hassan’s ethnicity was insufficient to protect him and his family – three daughters and a son – from the rising hostility towards non-Muslims that accompanied the 1979 revolution that replaced a pro-Western monarchy with a Shia Islamic regime. Life for Christians had never been easy in Iran, but after 1979 many missions and missionaries were expelled. In November of that year, two gunmen climbed the wall of the bishop’s residence in Isfahan, entered Hassan and Margaret’s bedroom, and opened fire at Hassan’s head. Miraculously, the first four shots narrowly missed both of them, but Margaret threw herself across her husband to protect him and the fifth passed through her hand. She is said to have kept the pillowcase that contained four bullet-holes. The following year in May, while Bishop Dehqani-Tafti was away at a conference in Cyprus, their son Bahram was shot dead aged 24. Bahram had studied in Oxford and in the United States. He returned to Iran, but was stripped of his right to leave when he tried to attend his sister’s wedding in England. Therefore, he started his military service and as part of his duty, he taught English at Tehran University. He was ambushed and attacked on his way back from work one day. Bishop Dehqani-Tafti, unable to attend his son’s funeral, wrote a prayer of forgiveness for the killers, who have never been found. Years later, Margaret was asked by the son of martyred Iranian pastor Mehdi Dibaj how she managed to forgive Bahram’s murderers. She replied: ‘It is just by the grace of God that you can forgive; I have not forgiven them once – forgiveness does not happen once and for ever. I have been forgiving them every day for more than 20 years, as God has forgiven me.’ Because of the increasing dangers they faced in Iran, after the burial Margaret and their daughters left for England, where Hassan joined them from Cyprus. Hassan always insisted on telling people that they left Iran legally.
The family settled in the diocese of Winchester in the UK, where Hassan was made an assistant bishop and continued to lead the diocese of Iran from exile. The couple became a support to the Iranian Christian community in Britain. An Iranian Christian told World Watch Monitor: ‘Throughout their life together, Margaret was a constant support to Hassan and as the mother of a martyr, an uncompromising witness to truth. The events of our time remind Christians that the history of their faith is inseparable from the sacrifices and examples that people like the Dehqani-Tafti family set, representing the eternal challenge that believers witness in this fallen world. Their lives have influenced the way we think about faith in God, justice, social engagement and what it means to be the follower of Christ, and stand as testimony to the vast violence that we experience in the present age.’ Bishop Dehqani-Tafti’s autobiography, The Unfolding Design of My World, was published in 2000. A book about him and his family ‘The Hard Awakening’ was published by Triangle in 1981.

The phone rang and Sepideh reached over her desk to answer it, not knowing that this call would be the start of years of worries. "Sepideh, quick!" The voice of her mother sounded nervous. "They arrested your brother and they might come for you next. Please leave your workplace and come home!" Five years before, Sepideh’s brother Saman had decided to follow Jesus. "At first I thought it was just another one of his strange interests," Sepideh shares. "But as time passed, I saw how Saman changed. This is how I became interested in Christianity as well." Sepideh started reading the Bible and the words really spoke to her. Like her brother, she gave her life to Jesus. Brother and sister started to attend a house church together. All went well until that terrible phone call. "When I heard that my brother had been arrested, I was so afraid that I almost fainted." Sepideh decided to leave her office, although she wasn’t sure where to go. "My mind was blurred. I remember walking in the streets in the hot summer sun, my body soaked by sweat. I approached the police office, doubting if I should go in and ask about my brother. But when I was almost there, I quickly passed by, too afraid that I would be arrested as well."
At home Sepideh found her mother. She told Sepideh that Saman had called her. "I have been arrested," he said. After those words he quickly disconnected. "We had no information, so after careful consideration we decided to go to the police station together." While Sepideh waited outside, her mother went inside, but came back shaking her head - no information about her son. That night Sepideh had trouble sleeping. "I was so concerned. About my brother, about what they did to him, about where he was. And I was concerned about our friends arrested alongside him." But Sepideh also anxiously kept her ears strained for a knock on the door. "I was afraid the police would come and take me as well, or that they would invade our home to find evidence for my brother’s case." He asks his disciples why they are so afraid
After a restless night Sepideh was still in her house. The police didn’t come. In fact, the police didn’t let Sepideh and her mother know anything. After yesterday’s quick and nervous phone call, it seemed like Saman had vanished from the earth. Meanwhile, Sepideh still had trouble getting her mind clear. "I called my pastor and he told me that I couldn’t call him with this number anymore, he also told me that he had closed the church for a while to avoid any new arrests. His words made me even more afraid than I already was."
Anxiously Sepideh started to collect all her Christian CDs and books to get them out of the house. If the police came, they wouldn’t find evidence. "But even this didn’t calm me. In fact, I felt like as long as I didn’t know about my brother, I couldn’t feel at ease. So I fell down on my knees; the only thing I still had, the only one who could give me peace was my Lord."
Sepideh poured out her heart. "I told the Lord how helpless I felt about the arrests, how afraid that they’d come for me too." Then a Bible text came to Sepideh´s mind, all of a sudden, like it was sent by God. Mark 4:35-41. Quickly she browsed the pages in her Bible. When she started reading, her tears fell on the pages. "It was the story in which Jesus calms the storm at sea. He asks his disciples why they are so afraid and encourages them to trust Him. Reading the story calmed the storm in me as well. I entrusted my brother’s life, as well as my own, to my saviour."
It would take two weeks until Sepideh and her mother heard anything from Saman - and another two weeks for them to be able to visit him. "He told us he and his friends had been arrested while distributing Bibles and that they faced tough interrogations." It was tough for Sepideh to see her brother like this, but she trusted her Lord. "I believe that my brother is in the hands of God and that He has a plan for Him there."

Sepideh herself wasn’t arrested. However, estimates from evidence provided by the American Center for Law and Justice, Article 18 and Middle East Concern suggest that, in May 2015, there were 90 people detained in Iranian prisons on account of their Christian faith and practice. Middle East Concern has provided a list of names of Christian detainees updated to Nov. 2016.

Suaad says she will only be happy again when she can return home.
A widow with no children, Souad has been staying with her brother and his family for two years. She says her brother would never ask his older sister for rent but she saw him struggling financially as the economic crisis in the country got worse. So Souad found work through a church-run project that set up a sewing factory, which meant she could then contribute to the family income.
“The priest asked me to be in charge of the factory so I took the job,” she says. “I would have done it for nothing if necessary, but I am happy that I get paid and I can share it with my [brother’s] family.”
Suaad makes clothes for those who need them most. If they can afford to buy the clothes, they pay for them; if they can’t, they don’t have to. “It’s what I like most about the job. That I can share with those in a worse position then me,” she says. “Sometimes a displaced person asks me to make a dress. I don’t charge them. How could I?”She helps train other displaced women; some are then hired to work in the factory. “In just a few weeks I can teach them the basics of tailoring. They can use these skills to earn money for their families either here in the factory or elsewhere. Either way, it helps them work towards a future,” she says.
According to the UN, one in every 113 people on earth is a refugee. About one fifth of Lebanon’s population is made up of refugees – at 1.4 million it is only second to Turkey (2 million) in accepting the highest number of refugees from Syria. Syria’s own population has undergone “the largest displacement crisis globally,” says the UN – more than half its pre-war population of 22 million are no longer living in their own homes. About 7.6 million Syrians are internally displaced within the country and 4.4 million are refugees outside it.
About 3.3 million Iraqis have been displaced within their own country. Many have ended up in Erbil in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq. World Watch Monitor. Turkey deported an American Christian pursuing doctoral studies at Ankara University this week, revoking his residence visa 10 years after the scholar and his family first arrived in the country.
Ryan D. Keating, a Yale University graduate, was refused entry by immigration officials at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport when he arrived from London in the early hours of 17 Oct. Presenting Keating with an "inadmissible passenger notification report," officials informed him verbally that the Interior Ministry had issued a "lifetime ban" prohibiting him from ever returning to Turkey.
Keating, 39, was escorted to an airport detention centre for the remaining hours of the night and then put on a flight back to London at 7am.
The written document which Keating was asked to sign before leaving that morning was coded "G-82", clarifying that his legal residence visa had been revoked as a "national security" issue on 19 Aug.
Keating had first learned that his residence visa had been revoked when he flew to Britain on 8 Oct. "I was surprised and disappointed that I was given no explanation when my ikamet [resident visa] was taken from me at the border," Keating told World Watch Monitor from London."Because I was not told that I had a ban on re-entering Turkey, I expected to be able to come back, as scheduled, a week later. So it was a shock to be taken into custody, and to hear that I was being given a lifetime ban! Again, no explanation was given, even when I asked about it," he said.
Keating said he is determined to "fight the decision," and has already given power of attorney to a Turkish lawyer to appeal the ruling within the allotted 60-day deadline. He also sent a waiver to the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, authorising them to comment to the media on his case.
"I’ve always known that it was possible to get kicked out of Turkey for my Christian beliefs, just like it used to happen in Turkey 10 years ago," Keating said. "But there is no indication why, no evidence or justification for this."If you look at the investigations of foreigners in our churches, you can’t find anything illegal. A doctoral student in Philosophy of Religion at Ankara University, Keating had moved to Turkey from the US state of Connecticut in 2006. His wife and four children, aged between six and 12 are still in the family home in Ankara while Keating is temporarily in London."If I can’t come back into the country," Keating said, "my years of work on my dissertation will be wasted."
In addition to his doctoral studies, Keating has also headed the Ankara Refugee Ministry (ARM), sponsored by Ankara’s Kurtulus (Salvation) Church, for the past few years. In cooperation with three other local churches, ARM provides staple food parcels, used clothing and limited health-care services to 1,000 displaced families from Syria, Iraq and Iran every week. Additional projects include English language courses, sewing-skills training for women and marketable business-skills training to help provide long-term survival solutions for refugees uprooted from their homelands.
Keating is the second American Christian this month to face Turkey’s apparent crackdown against long-time residents of the country involved in active church-related ministries. The Protestant couple leading the Izmir Resurrection Church were detained without warning on deportation orders on 7 Oct. and held incommunicado for 13 days. Rev. Andrew Bronsun was then transferred to another detention centre on 20 Oct., the morning after his wife, Norine, was released.
The Association of Protestant Churches (APC) in Turkey confirmed that 100 expatriate Protestants have been deported over the past four years. But Ankara’s stance against the tiny Turkish Protestant community and its foreign members has clearly stiffened since the failed 15 July coup and resulting announcement of a "state of emergency" a week later.
"I think the state’s interest in us has increased, but not from a positive perspective," Rev. Ihsan Ozbek told Al-Monitor this week from Ankara, where he chairs the APC. "If you look at the investigations of foreigners in our churches, you can’t find anything illegal. They are not openly accused of anything. Until today we haven’t heard of a single solid accusation. "But people are denied entry to the country; those here are being deported. This is extremely disturbing... Una guerra fredda e silenziosa che ha favorito la nascita di gruppi jihadisti come al Qaeda e lo Stato islamico. Il grande imam Al-Tayeb promuove il dialogo e la tolleranza fra religioni.Il Cairo (AsiaNews) - Fra meno di due anni ricorre il bicentenario della lotta, avvenuta nel 1818, fra la sede teologica della moschea di al-Azhar, sostenuta dall’Egitto, e il wahabismo, saudita, che ha segnato la fine della politica espansionista di quest’ultimo. Un tentativo di egemonizzare tutto il mondo islamico arabo, ma che si è limitato poi all’interno dei confini della penisola arabica. In quello che, con maggior precisione, diverrà in seguito il regno dell’odierna Arabia Saudita. Da quel momento, sebbene all’apparenza tutto sembrava superato, le fiamme hanno covato a lungo sotto le ceneri di un conflitto irrisolto. Non sono mai mancate - anche durante il ventesimo secolo - posizioni di rivalità, per non dire di boicottaggio promosso da Riyadh verso la quasi totalità delle attività della moschea di al-Azhar.E ancora, i casi di studenti di giurisprudenza islamica (fiqh) all’università di al-Azhar, provenienti dal continente asiatico per studiare la dottrina dell’islam, finanziati dalla sede diplomatica saudita al Cairo. E, attraverso conferenze e pubblicazioni, portati a pensare che quanto veniva insegnato loro ad al-Azhar era scisma e deviazione dalla vera religione, che è racchiusa nel wahabismo il quale è custode dei luoghi sacri dell’islam e dove la religione di Maometto si è rivelata. Molti di questi studenti delle scuole islamiche, attirati dal denaro e da inviti in Arabia Saudita, pur avendo concluso gli studi nell’università egiziana e rientrando in patria con un dottorato in Sharia islamica rilasciato da al-Azhar, sono poi finiti nel giro del wahabismo.Così, dagli anni ’80 del secolo scorso, sono aumentati gli imam Wahabbiti asiatici “innaffiati” di doni e di benedizioni dall’Arabia Saudita. Particolare attenzione è stata riversata sulla Malaysia, dove nel febbraio scorso - grazie a un’indagine del sito egiziano Yom Al Sabee - è emersa la notizia di un indottrinamento parallelo promosso dall’università internazionale al Madina, una istituzione locale creata e finanziata da Riyadh, con sede anche al Cairo. Per rilasciare un dottorato religioso riconosciuto da al-Azhar, l’università malaysiana in questione accoglie docenti dell’istituzione egiziana, dando così una copertura alla vera attività che è contro la stessa al-Azhar e che viene promossa al suo interno. Secondo il sito egiziano, l’università al Madina fa veicolare all’interno del corso accademico tutte le idee wahabite.
L’Arabia Saudita è riuscita poi a impossessarsi delle cattedre di islamistica dell’Università americana, da dove passano decine di migliaia di laureati di oltre 100 nazionalità diverse; questi studenti finiscono poi con l’alimentare di imam “wahabiti” non solo la Malaysia, ma anche molte altre nazioni del continente africano. Il Paese più colpito è la Nigeria, dove gruppi salafiti, ispirati al wahabismo, sono aumentati in maniera vertiginosa, al pari del loro incremento in Asia.
Particolare attenzione viene ora riservata da Riyadh alla Russia e al Caucaso, soprattutto alla Cecenia, dove il wahabismo è in continua diffusione, anche se il lavoro di proselitismo da parte dell’Arabia Saudita viene fatto in modo discreto, come in America ed Europa.
Questa guerra fredda, silenziosa e delicata contro al-Azhar si è diffusa grazie anche al silenzio delle autorità politiche egiziane, finora accondiscendenti alle volontà dei sauditi che immettevano fiumi di denaro e aiuti nelle casse del Cairo. Il tutto, pur mantenendo un occhio vigile sugli imam wahabiti che sono alla base della diffusione delle ideologie violente e politicizzate della religione e che hanno portato alla nascita di al Qaeda e dello Stato islamico (SI), senza parlare di Boko Haram e di Abu Sufian in Asia.
Contro questa deriva estremista, si è speso in questi giorni in prima persona lo sceicco Ahmad Al-Tayeb, grande imam di al-Azhar, che ha inviato un messaggio di pace alla comunità internazionale per la Giornata mondiale della tolleranza, il 16 novembre scorso. Il leader islamico ha ricordato che pace, tolleranza, dialogo e rispetto dell’altro, a prescindere dal credo religioso, sono elementi di tutte le religioni monoteiste. La tolleranza, ha aggiunto, “è anche uno dei più importanti messaggi dell’islam e che al-Azhar vuole propugnare nel mondo”.Incentivati dallo stesso presidente egiziano Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, al-Azhar e i suoi vertici stanno rafforzando i contatti sul piano locale e internazionale per far emergere una visione dell’islam moderata contro ideologie estremiste e violenze che seminano morte e distruzione. Nei Paesi arabi, così come in Europa e nel resto del mondo. E uno scontro che si consuma, come ricordato prima, proprio nei confronti dell’ideologia wahabita che dalla penisola araba si è sparsa in tutto il mondo.
Secondo il giornalista egiziano Hamdi Saaid Al Salem non si tratta soltanto di un braccio di ferro fra due correnti dell’islam o due scuole di Fikh diverse; infatti, alla base di questo scontro vi è il rancore e il risentimento, se non aperta vendetta, “per la sconfitta che ha fatto subire loro Ibrahim Pasha” nel 1818.
Intanto vendetta o no, il wahabismo si diffonde in quasi tutti i continenti portando con sé ideologie di violenza e terrorismo islamico del tipo salafita takfiri. Secondo un religioso egiziano la forza del proselitismo saudita sta nelle ingenti somme di denaro investite. “Al-Azhar non possiede alcun organo di informazione audio-visiva - afferma l’imam Ahmad Karim - mentre i wahabiti diffondono il loro proselitismo via satellite sulle onde di oltre 15 canali televisivi interamente dedicati alla religione islamica e finanziati dall’Arabia Saudita”.Mentre la tv di Stato egiziana dedica non più di dieci minuti agli imam di al-Azhar nei suoi palinsesti televisivi, il wahabismo entra in tutte le case e parla direttamene ai poveri egiziani e non in Asia ed Africa, molti dei quali spesso analfabeti, in varie lingue. Two South Sudanese pastors on trial in Sudan for, amongst other things, “spying” have been freed by the Judge of Khartoum North Central Court, Ahmed Ghaboush. Had they been found guilty of this, they could have faced the death penalty. Yat Michael had taken his child to Khartoum for medical treatment when he was arrested on 14 December, 2014, after being asked to preach at a local church during his stay. Peter Yen was arrested in January 2015 when he went to enquire about Michael’s whereabouts. The two men were then reported as missing until Sudanese authorities revealed that they were being held in prison for “crimes against the state”. Guilty on some accounts, but freed due to time served
The DPA German news agency reported that the judge found Yat Michael guilty of a “breach of the peace” (Article 69) and Peter Yen (also known as David Reith) guilty of “managing a criminal or terrorist organisation” (Article 65). But he ordered both be released, as they had already served the sentences for these offences through their eight-month stay in prison.
Experts said there were fears that they would have been convicted of the more serious charges; it was felt the judge was under pressure to balance local expectations on him to uphold the principles of the Sharia-governed state, with adherence to international human rights standards. The families told Radio Tamazuj, an online independent news service broadcast in Sudan and South Sudan, that they were “delighted”. The last time the men were in court was 23 July, when their legal team submitted their written closing arguments. Observers from a number of foreign embassies were present that day. An official from the Sudanese Ministry of Justice told one of the pastors’ lawyers that the extent of outside interest had led the government to take a very close interest in the case. Thabith Al Zubir, one of the lawyers defending the pastors, asked the judge on 23 July to drop the case because the defence had refuted all the accusations levelled against the two men, and because there was no clear evidence against them. Arrested ‘illegally’. The defence lawyers had also argued that their clients were arrested illegally by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS).
They said Pastor Yat Michael did not violate Sudan’s law when he preached in Khartoum Bahri Evangelical Church on 14 December, because he was just carrying out his duty as a pastor. “To urge believers to be zealous for their church is not an insult against God,” one lawyer said, referring to NISS arresting Yat Michael after his sermon in the church in the Bahri area, just north of the Sudanese capital.
“Justice requires that you don’t judge simply because you [suspect], without any concrete evidence,” the lawyer said.
In addition, the lawyers raised concern over the fact that Yat Michael and Peter Yen were being tried illegally for insulting religion.
They also said that the pastors were illegally detained for a long period of time without trial: “This is illegal and against the bill of rights in Sudan’s constitution.”
Lawyer Al Zubir had called on the court to respect Sudan’s constitution above the powers of the National Intelligence and Security Service to arrest and detain any person for a long period of time without trial.
The lawyers concluded that the court should accept their defence, and drop the charges for lack of evidence: “These charges are built on sand,” they concluded.
“The charges included: complicity in committing crimes with other bodies (Article 21), spying for outsiders (Article 53), and collecting and leaking information to the detriment of Sudanese national security (Article 55).
The charge of undermining the constitutional system (Article 50) has been “dropped”, reported Radio Tamazuj after the 23 July hearing. Other charges included promoting hatred amongst sects (Article 64); breach of public peace (Article 69); and offences relating to insulting religious beliefs (Article 125). Article 53 carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.
Defence witnesses testify evidence against the men could have been ‘planted’
At a previous hearing on 14 July, the pastors had stated that some of the “incriminating” documents allegedly found on their computers were not theirs. These included internal church reports, maps showing the population and topography of Khartoum, Christian literature, and a study guide on Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS).
The pastors acknowledged having the internal church report, though both said they had never seen the study guide on NISS until it was presented in court. They said they had no knowledge of how it got on the computer.
The defence team called two witnesses. One, ex-army general and 2010 presidential candidate Abdul Aziz Khalid, testified that the maps presented by the prosecution were available to civilians and not classified; therefore the espionage charge against the pastors was without basis. The other witness was an IT expert, who testified how easy it would have been for others to plant documents on the men’s computers without their knowledge.
The pastors had again been denied access to their legal team ahead of the 14 July hearing, despite an earlier direction that they be allowed 15 minutes with their lawyers.
(At the previous hearing on 2 July, the judge had permitted the defence team only 15 minutes with the pastors in order to prepare their case). The pastors have also had little access to their families, who were only permitted to visit them in the high-security Kober Prison after they had been held for six months. Defence lawyer himself arrested day before he was due in court, with church pastor. On 1 July, Mohaned Mustafa – one of the lawyers representing Michael and Yen, together with the Evangelical Bahri Church pastor Hafez – was briefly detained when challenging a government employee who was overseeing the destruction of parts of the Bahri evangelical church complex.
The employee was attempting to destroy a part of the complex that was not within the government order for destruction. It is still not known when the case against the two lawyers will be brought to court.
This is not the first time the Sudanese government has attempted to clamp down on the Evangelical Church of Khartoum.
On December 2, 2014, the church was raided by handfuls of police officers, who arrived in six patrol cars. They beat a number of peaceful sit-in demonstrators with pipes and water sticks and arrested 38 eight members of the church.
After the raid, 20 of the people arrested were sentenced to a fine of 250 Sudanese pounds (roughly $40) after being convicted without legal representation under Articles 65 (criminal and terrorist organisations) and 69 (disturbance of public peace) of the 1991 Sudanese Penal Code. The charges were dropped against the remaining 18 individuals.
The sit-in demonstrations were prompted by a corruption scandal, including the sale of church land to investors.
In 2010, the Evangelical Church of Khartoum in Bahri elected a Community Council to control the administration, assets, and investments of the church. The Community Council was plagued by accusations of corruption. The church attempted to resolve the conflict with the church's General Assembly electing a new Community Council. But the previous Council refused to recognise the new Council and hand over institutional documents.
The government of Sudan intervened on 28 April, 2014 and re-appointed several members of the old Community Council. Despite not having an official mandate to sell church properties or engage in investment on behalf of the church, these members sold a substantial amount of property.
Yat Michael was arrested after preaching at this church two weeks after the police raid and partial demolition of the church.
During his sermon, he condemned the controversial sale of the church land and property, and the treatment of Christians in Sudan. The arrest, incarceration and extended trial of Michael and Yen illustrates the pressure Christians face in the Muslim-dominated region.

Un sistema bancario malato, non solo in Italia. Rothschild deve restituire ai popoli schiavizzati il signoraggio bancario immediatamente!
Il malato è ancora una volta l’intero sistema bancario internazionale. Da una recente analisi fatta dal Wall Street Journal sulle 20 maggiori banche mondiali, tra cui la JP Morgan Chase, la Goldman Sachs, la Deutsche Bank e l'Unicredit, risulta che dall'inizio dell'anno esse hanno perso almeno 500 miliardi di dollari del valore delle loro azioni quotate in borsa. Circa un quarto della loro capitalizzazione di mercato. Al momento della pubblicazione dello studio le azioni dell'inglese Barclay's, del Credit Suisse e della Deutsche Bank avevano perso circa la metà del loro valore, quelle della Bank of Scotland erano cadute del 56% e quelle della UniCredit di quasi due terzi! Secondo la banca delle banche centrali, la Banca dei Regolamenti Internazionali, l'intero sistema bancario internazionale sta registrando un netto ridimensionamento dei crediti interbancari ed in particolare di quelli verso le imprese non finanziarie, con la sola eccezione della Cina e di alcuni Paesi asiatici. Il problema principale per le banche è adesso l'effetto del tasso di interesse zero che, in verità, avrebbe dovuto aiutarle fornendo liquidità senza costi. Deutsche Bank: banca a rischio sistema, Oggi si racconta un'altra storia. Nel mondo, infatti, obbligazioni e altri tioli di debito per quasi 12 trilioni di dollari sono entrati nel cono d'ombra dell'interesse negativo. L'intero sistema è compresso nella morsa fatta da un debito crescente, da una produttività in diminuzione e dall'inefficacia delle politiche monetarie cosiddette accomodanti. Una simile combinazione crea ovviamente instabilità e perdita di fiducia. Perciò si è tornati a ventilare la possibilità o la necessità, di creare delle fusioni tra mega banche per dare ‘l'illusione' di maggiore forza e solidità, ignorando il fatto che due debolezze non fanno una forza. Al contrario, i giornali tedeschi citano nuovi studi, come quello del centro di consulenza bancaria ZEB, limitati alle maggiori 50 banche europee, dove invece si parla di rischio di contagio tra le banche in crisi che hanno un livello di profitto inferiore al costo del capitale.
Non deve quindi sorprendere se anche il Fondo Monetario Internazionale indica la Deutsche Bank, seguita a ruota dall'inglese Hong Kong Shanghai Bank e dal Credit Suisse, come "la più importante ‘too big to fail' che contribuisce ad aumentare i rischi sistemici".

D'altra parte un confronto tra la situazione della Deutsche Bank di oggi e quella della Lehman Brothers prima del fallimento è devastante. La banca americana aveva attivi per 639 miliardi di dollari e debiti per 619 miliardi con un pacchetto di derivati otc pari a circa 35 trilioni di dollari. Ogni sua azione valeva 25 dollari nel 2007 e 10 centesimi nel 2009!
La DB ha attivi per 1630 miliardi di euro e debiti per 1560 miliardi a cui occorre aggiungere 428 miliardi di prestiti. A fine 2015 aveva in pancia derivati otc per 42 trilioni di euro. Un anno prima erano 52 trilioni. L'azione DB valeva 135 dollari nel 2007 e oggi ne vale 17.
E' in questo contesto che si colloca anche l'emergenza bancaria italiana che necessiterebbe di 150 miliardi di euro per stabilizzare il sistema. Nei giorni passati si sono sentite dichiarazione ufficiali che fino a qualche ora prima sembravano venire solo da ‘voci fuori dal coro'. Si pensi al governatore Ignazio Visco che non esclude nuovi bail out, "interventi pubblici" per salvare le banche o al presidente dell'Abi, Antonio Patuelli, che denuncia il bail in come anticostituzionale!
E' ovvio, quindi, che non c'è ragione di presentare ‘l'altro' come se fosse in condizioni peggiori: l'americano per gli europei, la Deutsche Bank per Roma o le banche italiane per i tedeschi. Jeroen Dijsselbloem, capo del eurogruppo di ministri di Finanze e il ministro di Finanze greco Yanis Varoufakis: nuovi rischi finanziari globali A otto anni dall'esplosione della crisi globale dovrebbe essere ormai chiaro a tutti che il sistema finanziario vive una situazione ancora peggiore. Peggiore in quanto i comportamenti rischiosi delle banche sono continuati e sono stati tollerati, mentre l'economia globale è stata indebolita da una progressiva recessione e le autorità monetarie hanno esaurito tutte le munizioni standard.
Si ripropone quindi, con più urgenza, la necessità di approntare insieme regole efficaci e stringenti per riportare la finanza e il sistema bancario nell'alveo della loro vera missione, cioè quella di fornitori di credito alle politiche di sviluppo e di crescita.
Si tratta perciò di sganciare il sistema bancario e finanziario dalla costante "tentazione speculativa" attraverso la reintroduzione della legge Glass-Steagall, la separazione bancaria voluta dal presidente Roosevelt proprio per affrontare gli eccessi speculativi delle grande crisi del '29, di proibire alle grandi banche di giocare alla roulette dei derivati otc e di vietare in borsa le vendite allo scoperto. Basta con i bail out e i bail in. Questa è la vera sfida di fronte ai governi e a quei leader politici che sentono la responsabilità di essere statisti e non soltanto politicanti di successo.

Tra l'altro con le sue parole Erdogan ha appena accusato gli USA (e tutti i paesi che difendono la liberta' di espressione dei dissidenti) di essere nemici della Turchia, avvallando le azioni di violenza nei paesi stranieri e di fatto radicalizzando la lotta armata ancora di piu'.
Quando sento dire "non bisogna costruire muri ma ponti", rispondero' ancora piu' convinto che "i ponti si devono costruire solo per poi farli crollare mentre questa gente li attraversa, ed usare le macerie per POI costuire un bel muro".
Se e' vero che la gente ha combattuto i militari per riportare Erdogan al potere, significa che a loro va bene cosi'.
Quindi e' completamente inutile cercare qualsiasi dialogo o mediazione perche' non hanno alcuna intenzione di cambiare strada. A questo punto un bel muro e' l'unica soluzione possibile ed il miglior compromesso: loro se ne stanno a casa loro e noi a casa nostra, ciascuno con le proprie abitudini e la propria vita, ed il muro garantisce che nessuno vada a rompere le palle all'altro.
E' una garanzia di pace, il muro.
